PIYUSH CHAWLA RETIREMENT FROM IPL

PIYUSH CHAWLA

.Piyush Pramod Chawla, who was born in Aligarh on December 24, 1988, and grew up in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, was exposed to cricket at a young age. At Sonakpur Stadium, he practiced with coach K.K. Gautam, developing the abilities that would make him one of India’s best leg-spinners. At the age of 17, he made his first-class debut in 2005–06, making headlines and giving hope for a bright future when he purportedly dismissed Sachin Tendulkar with a well-flighted googly.

Chawla’s ascent was swift. He made his Test debut against England in March 2006, his ODI debut against Bangladesh in May 2007, and his T20I debut against South Africa in May 2010 to win Indian caps in all three formats.

RETIREMENT FROM IPL

Chawla’s IPL career started in 2008 with Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), when he made an immediate impression by taking 17 wickets in 15 games in the first season and nearly winning the Purple Cap. Before joining the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014, he played for Punjab for six seasons from 2008 to 2013.

Chawla achieved new heights with KKR. He contributed crucial stretches and even hit the game-winning runs in the final as a member of their 2014 IPL-winning team. After staying with KKR through 2019, he played for the Chennai Super Kings for a season in 2020. He joined the Mumbai Indians in 2021, went unsold in 2022, but returned in 2023 and continued to play until 2024.

RETIREMENT FROM INTERNATIONAL CRICKET

In a heartfelt Instagram post on June 6, 2025, Chawla formally declared his retirement from all formats, including the IPL, domestic, and international: “Closing this chapter with Gratitude!! … It’s time to say goodbye after more than 20 years on the field. A career that had won the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2007 T20 World Cup came to an end with the announcement.
